Ambubachi Mela: The Mother Has Her Menstrual Cycle

From June 21–25, one of the most mystical festivals of the Vedic tradition unfolds at Kamakhya in Assam: Ambubachi Mela.

Chant this mantra during these 4 days:
Kāmākhye varade devī nīlaparvata-vāsini ।
Tvaṁ devī jagatāṁ mātā yoni-mudre namo’stu te ॥
कामाख्ये वरदे देवी नीलपर्वतवासिनि । त्वं देवी जगतां माता योनिमुद्रे नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

For three days each year, Maa Kamakhya is believed to undergo her annual menstrual cycle, and one of India’s most powerful Shakti Peethas closes its doors.

In Tantra, this is not viewed as impurity, but as the very source of creation. The Divine Mother withdraws her outward activity and returns to her deepest, most fertile state. Tantric traditions regard Ambubachi as a period when the creative power of Shakti is especially accessible to the sincere seeker.

When the temple reopens, devotees receive blessed red cloth associated with the Goddess’s creative Shakti. Thousands gather seeking blessings, spiritual renewal, and a deeper connection with the Divine Feminine.

Ambubachi reminds us that creation is born not only through action, but also through sacred pauses, retreat, and renewal.

May the blessings of Maa Kamakhya awaken wisdom, intuition, and Shakti within you.

Jai Maa Kamakhya.

Namaste,
